Emergency Department Specialist Connie Kalina — Recognized a Member in Distress and Positively Impacted the Member's Care and Life!

Emergency Department Specialist Connie Kalina was recognized by client leadership for noticing stroke-like symptoms in a patient waiting to check-in at the Emergency Department (ED). ED Specialist Kalina was on post at the Emergency Department security desk. At the same time, there was a delay in registration at intake when ED Specialist Kalina noticed and responded to a patient with stroke-like symptoms.

ED Specialist Kalina immediately collected the patient's ID and membership card, called for backup, ran to get the patient registered, and notified the lead about the patient, who quickly became a Stroke Alert and received immediate care. In Fresno Caring Moments, a client wrote, "Even though this is not the job of Security, Connie was amazing and played a vital role in getting that patient seen quickly. I don't think Security gets enough recognition for always going above and beyond here in the ED."

ED Specialist Kalina was the only Emergency Department Specialist on duty in the ED that day, and it was particularly busy. She called for backup, and they quickly arrived. When recalling that day, ED Specialist Kalina said, "We are often the first ones people see when they arrive at the Emergency Department. We are told to look out for certain things, like signs and symptoms of something more serious happening with patients." ED Specialist Kalina also shared that she is observant of her surroundings and tries to keep her eyes and ears open for the members.

Thank you, ED Specialist Connie Kalina. You are a true Hero. Successfully recognizing a member in distress and immediately escalating positively impacted the member's care and life!

Security Officer Loretta Tatum — Preventing a Possible Mugging

Security Officer Loretta Tatum from the Oakland Regional Building was monitoring security cameras and observed an individual on a bicycle circling an employee in front of the building. The employee was standing with their overnight bag, looking at their phone, while waiting for an Uber to the airport - they were heading home after a two-day visit to Oakland. Suddenly, a Jeep from the parking garage across the street jetted over to the visiting employee just as Officer Tatum came out the front doors.

Security Officer Lorretta Tatum — Preventing a Possible Mugging

The driver of the Jeep (a fellow employee) and Officer Tatum stepped in because they had observed the person on the bicycle circling, and they came to help. Their presence prevented any interactions and a possible mugging! Officer Tatum also gave the employee some good advice about downtown Oakland safety. The visiting employee later shared how grateful they felt for the teamwork and concern for their safety. They cared enough to intervene and ensure that the visiting employee was not mugged.

Thank you, Officer Tatum, for your vigilance, situational awareness, and acting when necessary!
